Essential oils, natural repellents for insects pantries
Essential oils, natural repellents for insects. ‘Just intruders in the pantry’: that is, just insects, considered among the major causes of damage to food with a loss of about 20% of the crops and up to 40% of food stored in granaries and warehouses worldwide. In choosing this slogan were Barbara Bedini Stefano Conti and the Department of Agricultural Sciences, Food and Agro-environmental of the University of Pisa in a recently published article in the journal ‘Food, Art and science of food’, organ of communication of the Scientific Committee Expo 2015.
This enormous loss of foods is currently being fought mostly with insecticides and repellents synthetic considered harmful to human health and the environment. The article made the point on surveys conducted in recent years on essential oils of aromatic plants as environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic products used to protect food and handouts.
“Our research published in scientific journals of reference in the industry as ‘Industrial Crops and Products’, ‘Journal of Pest Science’ and ‘Natural Products Research’ – explain the two experts of Pisa – have shown that essential oils of some aromatic plants, as well as some of their chemical components, exert a remarkable effect repellent against insects infesting foodstuffs coming to be up to thirty times more effective than synthetic repellents”.
It is scientific results that have a major impact both industrial and domestic: the essential oils and their compounds, they say Conti and Bedini, can in fact be used for the development of strategies for the protection of the food and eco-friendly without risks to human health.
These natural substances may be employed, for example, for the production of packagings insect proof, for treatments murals in stores and warehouses, or for the creation of diffusers to be used for the protection of dispensations housewives.
