And the same is true of Ceres, where the most Dawn spacecraft NASA reveals interesting details of this asteroid: after the two bright spots that had attracted the attention of this small celestial body, they discovered eight other and, above all, show a mountain shaped like a pyramid, which stands on a relatively flat.
“The surface of Ceres shows unique and very interesting,” says Carol Raymond, deputy researcher of the Dawn mission. “For example – adds – the icy moons in the Solar System have more peripheral craters with central holes, but on Ceres these structures are much more common. These and other features allow us to understand the inner structure of the asteroid, we can not perceive directly. “
A new view also showed the smaller spots in the crater, not visible before. At least eight spots can be seen near the brighter, the researchers estimate to be around 9 km away. The cause of these flashes is a highly reflective material, ice and salt probably, even if you are considering other options. By mapping with infrared spectrometry researchers can in fact identify the minerals present the way in which the light is reflected. In addition to the bright spots, the latest images show a mountain shaped like a pyramid height of about five kilometers. There is also ample evidence of past geological activity, with landslides and collapsed structures.

Their attention is focused in particular on the crater Istok, formed by an impact occurred on the surface of the Red Planet a little less than a million years ago. Inside you can see some alluvial cones, while the walls are recognizable debris flows similar to those reconstructed in the laboratory and those found on Earth, in the mountainous areas.
“These castings are so well preserved – the researchers – that have allowed us to discover how much water carried them and how often flowed.”
According to estimates, the flow of water was a few centimeters, or at least decimetres, and flowed at intervals of several years. Its formation was due to the melting of snow and ice present in larger amounts than expected. The phenomenon would occur in warmer periods due to the inclination of the planet to the Sun.
In these conditions, sunlight would have warmed the ice caps causing them to sublimate: the Martian atmosphere would thus become denser, resulting in precipitation also snowy. The melting of the snow on the crater walls would eventually generate these flows of water and debris.
“Now the environment on Mars is dry, but between some hundreds of thousands of years the planet will summarize again that inclination – geologists say – and this will make reappear liquid water and debris flows.”
